Sen. John Kerry used nurse practitioner Scharmaine Lawson-Baker's story to illustrate the importance of technology to health care when he spoke to the CMS E-Prescribing Conference in Washington, D.C., in October 2008. Lawson-Baker was able to continue treating New Orleans patients after Hurricane Katrina because she was able to hang on to her PDA.
