New Orleans nurse practitioner Scharmaine Lawson-Baker convinced CBS News to follow up on the continuing health care mess 2 years after Hurricane Katrina. Reporter Katie Couric spent a day following the NP as she made house calls to FEMA trailers. The 4-minute newscast emphasized Lawson-Baker's crucial role as an independent professional and often her patients' only connection to health services.

The first thought that comes to mind is, I am very proud of you!!! Second is, I want to be like Scharmaine Larson-Baker FNP when I grow up. Congratulation you've made us all proud (NP's) and determind to strive for a better health care world.

I am very proud of Ms. Baker for first of all being a fellow NP. She has put others' needs before her own. Secondly, for being a fellow New Orleanian who gave back to our community at a time when she like so many of us were just as vulnerable. She is a role model to me. I hope to some day have just as much courage to endure and perserve through all obstacles. Hats off to you!!!

Kudos to Larson-Baker FNP. I purposly went to school to do what she does. I am also an FNP (new grad). But b/c of lack of primary care practices that didn't need NP's I am now in cardiothoracic surgery working in the OR, the unit and floors. For now I will be in surgery but hopefully some time in my future I will be just like her. She is my role model. Congrats to advance for this great article and thanks for posting the video.
