Florida NPs Lobby Legislators

View Comments (2)Print ArticleEmail Article

Nurse practitioner and filmmaker Sue Hagedorn shot this video for Nursestories and the Florida Coalition of Advanced Practice Nurses. Florida's Healthcare Crisis: Advanced Practice Nurses Solutions was distributed to legislators in time for the 2009 session, which is discussing NP controlled substance prescribing for the 15th year. (This year's bills are SB 426 and HB 1259.)

Hagedorn's first video was a similar project about NPs for the Colorado Nurses Association produced in 2007.

Nancy,
Hello.
As a RN half way thru Adult Health ARNP program, I say to you "Good Luck" to you in your move to this state.

Just a "small but extremely fine pt." Florida is 1 of the last 2 states still with prohibited script privileges for NP.
And if our state capital continues to have it's way past 9 attempts and so far, I lost count after 10 attempts, to even get the proposed new script privileges out of state committee. Basically the AMA and their respective lobbyists and other "Physician friendly" contacts whether in/out of state government have continue to "overmatch and out-finance" any NP supportive (despite some of very recent & valid attempts by local NP chapters & FNA efforts in changing the status quo). Bottom Line... It may have to come down from the "Mount" (federally speaking as a dictate), to see any change...
So, if I had your "druthers" reconsider Florida as a NP friendly independent work environment to choose and Don't forget about the Hurricanes, Home-property Insurance costs & a state that can't get their budget under control, without Fed. help
Apologize to any that may feel I was in any way disrespectful, but I can only call them the way I see them.
Good Luck in your relocation efforts, Nancy.
Respectfully,
L.Johnson

I plan to move to Florida in Dec to "semi-retire" and have just gotten my License to practice there. I'm suprised to see how much more retrictive practice is in Florida and hope there will be support for changes legislation in our favor soon so that we can offer the high quality care we can provide to more florida residents.
